What makes Mango Tribe particularly exciting is the past and current
work it has produced in Chicago. What started as a dream 3 years ago,
has now become a pulse in the city's arts community, funneling Asian American
stories, experience, and culture to the heart of the city's diverse population
of artists in residence and supporters of the arts. What's more, due to
the lack of organizational support specifically for APIA women artists
nationwide, Mango Tribe was contacted by other artists in cities such
as New York, Los Angeles, and Minneapolis to participate in our productions.
This is a sad, but clear indication that our form of theatre and dance
is in demand not only in Chicago, but in other parts of the country as
well.
It is indeed a unique opportunity to make Chicago the home of diverse theatre and dance, incorporating national Asian American artists and international Asian artists into a scene traditionally known for its European influence. Of course, the universities and colleges enhance the cultural diversity of Chicago, but there is not one single theater or dance company that can claim itself as the city's original producer of Asian American plays and dance performances. Mango Tribe intends on filling the city's current void of Asian American culture and performance. We want to enrich the theatrical landscape. We want to contribute to the growth of experimental fusions of traditional and modern, and eastern and western forms of artistic expression.
Mango Tribe is groundbreaking through its unique inter-city collaborative fusion of theater, music, and dance.
